Report series 21. Prison Health, International Standards and National Practices in Europe

The study reviews the prison health services throughout Europe, on the basis of questionnaires sent to the national prison health services, and of supplemental information. The study overviews the response of the prison health services to a complex set of problems, such as the health problems suffered by prisoners entering prison, the problems caused by the prison environment itself, and the at times conflicting role of the prison physician as both a physician and a prison staff member. The study concludes by suggesting the development of national and international guidelines.
